Self-Employed Health Insurance Guide

Freelancers, consultants, and small business owners have unique tools to manage their ACA subsidy eligibility.

How Self-Employment Income Affects MAGI

Your MAGI for ACA purposes starts with your net self-employment income (revenue minus business expenses) reported on Schedule C. From there, several above-the-line deductions reduce your MAGI further:

  • โœ“Deductible half of self-employment tax (7.65% of net SE income) โ€” automatic above-the-line deduction
  • โœ“Self-employed health insurance deduction โ€” premiums you pay for yourself and family (but see the interaction note below)
  • โœ“Retirement plan contributions โ€” SEP-IRA, Solo 401(k), or SIMPLE IRA
  • โœ“HSA contributions โ€” if enrolled in a qualified HDHP

Business Deductions That Reduce MAGI

Every legitimate business expense reduces your net SE income, which directly reduces your MAGI. Key deductions include:

Home Office Deduction

Simplified: $5/sq ft up to 300 sq ft ($1,500). Regular method can be higher based on actual expenses.

Vehicle Expenses

Standard mileage rate (67ยข/mile in 2026) or actual expenses for business use.

Equipment & Software

Section 179 deduction allows full expensing of business equipment in the year purchased.

Professional Services

Accounting, legal, consulting fees, and professional subscriptions are deductible.

Business Travel

Transportation, lodging, and 50% of meals when traveling for business.

Education & Training

Courses, certifications, and training that maintain or improve your business skills.

SEP-IRA and Solo 401(k) Strategies

SEP-IRA

  • โ€ข Contribute up to 25% of net SE income
  • โ€ข Maximum: ~$69,000 in 2026
  • โ€ข Simple to set up and administer
  • โ€ข Deadline: tax filing deadline (with extensions)
  • โ€ข No employee deferral component
  • โ€ข Best for: solo operators with high income

Solo 401(k)

  • โ€ข Employee deferral: $23,500 ($31,000 if 50+)
  • โ€ข Plus employer contribution: 25% of net SE income
  • โ€ข Combined max: ~$69,000 ($76,500 if 50+)
  • โ€ข Can include Roth contributions
  • โ€ข Must be set up by Dec 31
  • โ€ข Best for: maximizing total contributions

Example: A consultant earning $120,000 net SE income contributes $23,500 to a Solo 401(k) (employee deferral) plus $25,000 (employer portion). Combined with the SE tax deduction (~$8,478), their MAGI drops to about $63,022 โ€” potentially below the subsidy cliff.

Quarterly Income Management

Self-employed individuals have more control over when income is recognized:

  • โ†’Invoice timing: Delay sending invoices in late Q4 to shift income to the next year, or accelerate invoices to pull income into a lower-earning year.
  • โ†’Project timing: If you can choose when to complete projects, align completion with years where your income is naturally lower.
  • โ†’Estimated tax tracking: Monitor your year-to-date income each quarter. If you're approaching 400% FPL, consider maximizing deductions or deferring income.
  • โ†’Prepaying expenses: Accelerate deductible business purchases into the current year if you need to reduce MAGI.

The Health Insurance Deduction Interaction

โš ๏ธ Important Circular Calculation:

Self-employed individuals can deduct their health insurance premiums as an above-the-line deduction. But your ACA subsidy depends on your MAGI, and your MAGI depends on the premium deduction, which depends on how much subsidy you get.

The IRS has a special iterative calculation (Revenue Procedure 2014-41) to resolve this. In practice:

  • โ€ข You can deduct the net premium (after subsidies) as your SE health insurance deduction
  • โ€ข This creates a feedback loop that usually requires software or a tax professional to calculate precisely
  • โ€ข The net effect is generally positive โ€” you get both a subsidy AND a deduction, just not both at full value
